Update on Blue-Green Algae for 2013 and Beyond

Bad News: Due to a warming climate, the problem of Blue-Green Algae in Lake Erie is expected to get worse, year by year.  Lake Erie is the shallowest, and therefore the warmest, of the Great Lakes.  Check out this article from the Great Lakes Echo, which indicates “As a result, Lake Erie’s aquatic life and wildlife in nearshore areas face more frequent exposure to toxins. Food webs face disruption. Fisheries will suffer. Lake Erie’s persistent dead zone will expand. And water chemistry will change:”

Heavy storms increase fertilizer and nutrient runoff into the lake, which increases the cynobacteria levels exponentially.  Not good.  We need to start changing our ways.
